Dr. K L Ravi Kumar has been with KIMS, Bangalore for more than 3 decades. He has supervised research projects on studies about the invasive pneumococcal disease, Leptospirosis, Malaria, HIV, Dengue, and Mycobacterium. He has guided 3 Postdocs, 7 PhDs, and 35 MD students. He has served in various administrative positions at the institution and university.

Currently, the central research laboratory headed by Professor Ravikumar is involved in research work related to infectious diseases. He ensures that the laboratory’s vision, mission, and strategic objectives are achieved. The group’s research interests are studies on serotype and genotype distribution, pneumococcal vaccine impact, genomic surveillance, and AMR profiling for priority pathogens. Molecular technologies like - Microarray, PCRSeq Typing, and FAF-mPCR are standardized and applied for the study.

Established and leads a network of 125+ laboratories and hospitals in India. The laboratory has developed molecular methods to identify and type S.pneumoniae and culture clinical samples under the supervision of Prof. Ravikumar. He is chairman of the Infection Control Committee, Sentinel Surveillance Programme member, Advisory Board member on antimicrobial resistance, and Editor of microbial genomics.
